Testing the Waters: A Study with Commonwealth Engineers, Inc.

Boosting Kentland’s economy through clean water initiatives.

Health and Safety Begins with a Choice

We’re committed to providing Kentland the cleanest water possible.

Access to healthy drinking water is essential for life to thrive, and in this blog we’re focussing in on the quality of Kentland’s water. On August 21st, two Operations Specialists with Commonwealth Engineers, Inc. met with TJ Firkins to draw samples from all three of our raw water wells. We’re testing several parameters, including but not limited to Fluoride, Zinc, Iron, Sulfate and and pH. We’re excited to tell you more about this water study, starting with the company we’re partnering with to make it happen.

Indiana’s Top-Tier Water Resources Firm

When it comes to providing award-winning, cost-effective planning, permitting, design, and construction engineering solutions, Commonwealth Engineers, Inc. is top of mind. They’ve earned a substantial reputation as a top-tier water resources firm since their start in 1974, working with communities of all sizes across the State of Indiana.

Why Conduct a Water Study?

We’ll answer this question by starting with the fundamental purpose of any public water supply facility. They exist to provide water that’s satisfactory in terms of delivery pressure and quantity while also being both aesthetically pleasing and affordable to townsfolk who are enjoying the utility. These facilities also need to be able to meet projected future demands over the course of a reasonable planning period. This means as the town grows, we’re able to effectively meet its needs. The water study, otherwise known as a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER), identifies components that are critical for providing safe drinking water for our town.

Conducting this water study is us being proactive and ensuring the continued treatment of high quality water for residents and businesses alike. We’re reviewing and evaluating the systems in place to eliminate “dead ends” throughout the Town, adequately mix Kentland’s stored water to provide fresh water at all times, and make any repairs needed to meet current safety and design standards.

Our Water is Tested: What Happens Next?

Within the Preliminary Engineering Report, the present condition and future needs of Kentland’s public water supply facility are reviewed. The PER also lists alternatives for improving our raw water quality. Commonwealth will provide a final recommendation and actionable steps to help us enhance our community water supply going forward.

Our town is all about making bold moves, and we see this work as yet another step in making Kentland a safer and healthier town. To stay updated on all of the newest developments regarding the PER, you can sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
