What is the Workreation Program?

The Workreation Program is a proposed initiative for children and teenagers in Kentland to provide meaningful employment opportunities for local youth during summer breaks while addressing community needs through various service projects. Inspired by the successful model implemented in Lafayette, Indiana, this program seeks to engage Kentland’s youth in constructive activities that promote personal development, civic engagement, and community improvement.

Program Details

Requirements

All participants must have a parent-signed registration form with the Park Board. Completed registration forms must be submitted to the Workreaction Coordinator when the child attends the program.

Age Group

Children and teenagers aged 7 to 17.

Activities

Light cleaning and maintenance tasks in the vicinity of Batton Park, Community Center, and Kentland Pool area.

Schedule

Tuesday and Thursday: 9:30 am – 10:30 am.

Rewards

Participants earn a “Single Splash Pass” for each completed work hour. These passes can be redeemed for admission to recreational activities at Kentland Pool.

How to Register for Workreation:

Step 1

Read the Workreaction Program Participation Agreement and Program Expectations outlined below.

Step 2

Complete the 2024 Workreaction Registration form. Up to four (4) children per family can be registered on the same form. Children must be between the ages of 7-17 years, and birthdates must be provided.

Step 3

Fill out the Emergency Contact Information and Medical Authorization and Release Agreement on the registration form. This form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Step 4

Submit your COMPLETED registration materials to the staff member in charge of the session. (You only need to register once)

Workreation Program Participation Agreement

In consideration of the applicant’s participation in the Workreaction Program, the parties hereby agree as follows:

  • Severe environmental allergies to common program items (peanuts, latex, etc) must be brought to the Workreaction Staff’s attention at registration. We will make reasonable accommodations whenever possible.
  • If your child has special needs, please discuss them with the Workreaction Staff in advance so we can help make the experience successful. If appropriate or necessary, please plan to stay and be present if issues arise.
  • Class size is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration is required. Only registered individuals may participate in activities.
  • Parents will be notified if disciplinary issues arise. The Town of Kentland and the Park Board reserve the right to exclude individuals from further participation if disciplinary issues are unresolved.
  • Participation in any Town of Kentland or Park Board event grants permission for the Town of Kentland to use photos, videos, and other images of the participant in promotional materials, including website or social media use.
  • The Town of Kentland and the Park Board reserve the right to cancel an event or program due to the following reasons: insufficient registration; inclement weather which would compromise the health or safety of the staff members or participants; or guidelines set by the Workreation staff are not respected or followed.

We believe that children thrive when they know what is expected of them. Please review the following safety and courtesy basics with your child:

  • Kids are expected to speak and act with respect at all times.
  • Kids must stay with the group, where staff members can see them.
  • Kids are expected always to show a good attitude.
  • Have Fun!

Behavioral Policy Requirements

Each child must:

  • Follow the safety rules of Workreation
  • Cooperate with staff and other participants
  • Respect the rights and property of others
  • Listen and follow instructions
  • Participate with a positive attitude at all times

Program Offenses

The Workreaction staff understands that children can misbehave and that many of these misbehaviors are minor; however, a child’s behavior may be serious enough to warrant adult intervention and implementation of one of the following offenses:

  • Minor Offense include but are not limited to swearing, failing to follow directions, and general misbehaving, which will result in:
    • Verbal reprimand
    • Written explanation of behavior
  • Major Offense include but are not limited to bullying, harassing, refusal to follow directions, causing physical harm, repeated minor offenses, and will result in:
    • 1st offense: Behavior will be documented, and Workreation staff will notify the parent or guardian.
    • 2nd offense: Behavior will be documented, Workreation staff will notify parent or guardian, and no Park Pals Single Splash Pass will be issued that day.
    • 3rd offense: The child will be suspended from the program.

Days: Tuesday and Thursday
Time: 9:30 am – 10:30 am

Children are expected to be dropped off and picked up more than 15 minutes before or after the program begins and ends. Failure to comply will result in dismissal from the program.
